How to test if your honey is pure or adulterated

pure honey

Honey business is a lucrative business and besides its health values can’t be quantified. I want to talk about the differences between an original and fake honey. YES!, there are fake honey product out there and they are sold in the name of ‘original’. If you are not careful you wouldn’t be able to spot the difference. It took me months of research to start getting it right in identifying an original natural honey. But, before I got to that stage of being an expert in honey, I must say I was deceived on several occasion. The Last case I had with a fake honey was 3 years ago, i bought some honey and used some of it. When i finally opened the reserve, there was a small “pop” sound i heard. This pop sound points to the fact that some fermentation process has taken place within the bottle. An indication that the honey may be adulterated – despite all the assurances of the vendor otherwise.
There are several brands of honey sold in supermarkets with labels screaming how Pure and Natural they are despite being the opposite. Most people don’t know this for a fact and so go straight to purchase it.
Adulterated honey is a big deal, especially for people that are trying to cut out sugar from their diet.
Here is a comprehensive list of tests you can perform on your honey to find out if it real or not.
There are other technical ways to find out the true nature of your because the more the nature of adulterated honey is known, the more the perpetrators indulge in more ways to evade been noticed.
So carry out the following test now;
Lets start by distinquishing a pure honey from a fake one
PURE HONEY
1.      Has honey aroma
2.      Causes a mild burning sensation in the throat.
3.      Do not separate into layers.
4.      Has natural impurities (pollen, bee bread, micro particles of wax)
5.      Has a soft texture (thin, filament-like trickle)
6.      Quite thick, trickles in a thin stream.
7.      No foam

FAKE HONEY
1.      Sour smell or no smell
2.      Does not cause mill burning sensation in the throat
3.      Separates into layers
4.      No impurities
5.      Has a rough texture (forms clumps)
6.      Runny (drips, immediately spreads along the surface)
7.      Has form
CARRY OUT THE FOLLOWING TEST AT HOME
1.      Hold a lighted match to the honey, if it is a natural honey it will melt and not begin to hiss straight away
2.      Mix the honey in water. Natural honey will not dissolve. If you add 2-3 drops of iodine to the solution, it will not turn blue.
3.      Put some honey unto a piece of paper, if a damp patch spread around it then it is diluted.
4.      Dip a piece of stale bread into the honey. After 8-10 minutes, it should still be firm and not soften.
5.      Mix some water inside the honey and add 2-3 drops vinegar essence. If the solution becomes foamy, it is adulterated honey.
6.      Heat a stainless steel piece of wire and insert it into the honey. A good product will stick on the metal and not flow back into the jar.
